Domains renew for one year at a time. Auto-renew is on by default, so an invoice is created before the expiry date and reminder emails are sent 30 and 7 days before.
If a domain expires, most extensions allow a short grace period to renew at the normal price. After that a restore fee applies, and the name can be lost. Renew early to be safe.
